Reducing Gang Violence to be a Priority in 2008

January 11th, 2008 · No Comments

In 2007, San Jose had a total of 36 homicides in 2007. Police for the city have linked at least half of them to gang violence between the rival gangs, Norteno and Sureno. Because of this, city officials have pledged to make reducing gang violence a priority for 2008.

Mayor Chuch Reed has stated that he does not feel that arresting everyone will stop the problem. It’s simply not possible to “arrest away” the gang problem. Councilman Pete Constant, himself a retired police officer, said that the city of San Jose has seen an increase in all types of crime, from residential burglary to auto theft, because the city has lessened the amount of money they’re putting into crime prevention.

To combat crime, the city has hired 15 additional police officers. They started their training Wednesday.
