Jurors took less than half an hour Monday to acquit police officer Shawn Charles of two misdemeanor battery charges brought against him two years ago by his girlfriend, Barbara Holgate, and his mother.
The first trial in the case, held in September, ended in a hung jury, leading the mother to take back her statements and say that Charles never assaulted her or Holgate, and depriving the prosecution of their star witness. Police officers and paramedics also testified that Holgate displayed no marks of any kind at the scene, and was not treated for any injuries.
Shawn Charles has been assigned to administrative duties for two years, in which he collects full pay but is not allowed to carry a gun. The department has not yet decided whether to take any action in his case.
