In a string of purse snatchings that stretches from November, various gangs have been preying on Asian women’s purses. Why Asian women? They are known to carry large sums of cash.

The purse snatchers, known to San Jose police as Rippers, stalk a woman through the parking lot of a strip center. One then gives the signal and they, in tandem, grab the purse. These individuals generally wear dark, hooded sweatshirts and have targeted 19 Vietnamese women and 1 Chinese woman. There have been 21 snatchings total.

The majority of the robberies have been conducted with stealth and strong-arm tactics; however, three of the victims have been confronted with guns and knives.

The police do not believe that this is one gang but rather a number of gangs that happen to be using the same tactics to gain cash. Police are recommending that people not carry large amounts of cash. They also feel there might have been more robberies but the victims are too scared or embarassed to come forward.
