Controversial Drug Enforcement Grant Program

June 19th, 2008 · No Comments

The US House Subcommittee renewed the Byrne Justice Assistance grant program last week. The program while politically popular, sparks controversy as it has been linked to racial disparities, civil rights abuse, and police corruption. The program will go before the House Judiciary Committee today.

Twenty criminal justice and civil rights groups signed a letter to the House Judiciary urging amendments to be made before renewal. The groups included the ACLU, Drug Policy Alliance, Brennan Center, and National Association of Blacks in Criminal Justice.
