Foley Awarded $5.5 Million by City

Steve Foley was shot by an Aaron Mansker, an off-duty police officer. The injuries sustained ended his football career. The shooting occurred during a confrontation outside Foley’s home

Foley pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor drunken driving charge and is serving 5 years of probation. Foley’s team contends that the police officer violated his training during the confrontation which called for him to only follow Foley.

Mansker has retained his job with the police department and sill remains on the force.

Deadly Drinking Games

Jenna Foellmi, a 20 year old biochemistry major, died of alcohol poisoning last December. She had fallen asleep with several other friends in the house and was found dead the next morning.

The number of alcoholic related death among college students has nearly doubled in the last several years according to the Associated Press. Over half of the victims were under the legal drinking age of 21.

In most cases, the friends knew the victim was drunk and put them to bed, so they could sleep. Charges are filed in approximately 40% of the cases generally against those who provided alcohol for someone underage. Generally, plea bargains are reached and a combination of fines, community service, and probation is served.

Teenagers Suspected of Hate Crime

Three teens will be arrested in association of a vandalism spree which is being considered a hate crime. The suspects are all under the age of 16. They are suspected of committing 16 instances of vandalism. The teens sprayed the acronym KKK as well as other racial and ethnic slurs on pubic and private property. They are also accused of stealing items from the cars which the vandalized.

Charges filed will probably be acts of vandalism, criminal mischief, hate crime, and larceny. The degree of the charges will depend on the total amount of damage. Warrants are currently being prepared, but all three boys have already admitted to the crimes.

Barbershop Shooting

Marcus Perry was sentenced to 12 years in prison followed by 8 of special parole. He is responsible for the 2005 shooting in MLB Barber Shop. He intended to kill Tyrese Lockhart, but his aimed missed. Bullets grazed, but no one was seriously injured.

Unfortunately, Tyrese Lockhart was the target of second shooting by Antonio Inglis and did not survive. Inglis also took the life of Israel Dandrade. He is facing two counts of murder, first-degree assault, and carrying a pistol without a permit. Because he charged with two counts of murder, he is facing the death penalty.

Foreclosure Rescue Scam

Two individuals who defrauded homeowners in a “foreclosure rescue” con pleaded guilty yesterday. Over 80 households fell victim to the scam which netted the criminals $20 million in home equity loans and $1.4 million in fees.

Maurice McDowall is credited as the director of the illegal operation. His sentencing could reach up to 30 years in prison. He is being charged with conspiracy to commit bank fraud, wire fraud, and for his illegally acquired money.

The second man, Aleksander Lipkin, faces similar charges. He used his knowledge as a mortgage broker to assist the scam.
